“Dreamer” is a lofty moniker to live up to as a musician—similar to children named after world historical figures. Luckily, the responsibility has come easy for 21-year-old Dreamer Isioma. It’s easy to be impressed when watching the Nigerian-American singer open up for Flo-Milli, perform alongside Pharrell, and be tapped by the Grammys to perform for their “At-Home” show. But what shines alongside their musical talent is their casual use of metallic fuchsia pantsuits and their ability to make boxers wearable on their own. Dreamer resisted conformity from an early age, and worked to carve out space for self-expression. They moved around often, and grew up in Lagos, London, and Chicago. In Illinois, they attended a Catholic school. By wearing their older brother’s oversized uniform shirt paired with feminine fitted skirts, makeup, and nail polish, they learned to confirm their gender within the confines of these traditional spaces. “I was secretly wearing whatever I wanted,” they say. “I really tried to push it.” From as early as they could remember, their sense of self remained unrattled. “People would be like, ‘You need to dress like this, you need to talk like this and you need to act like this,’ ” they remember. This plea was often met with a “respectfully, no.”

Today, Kylie Jenner stepped out—no, wait, seemingly floated out—in New York City. The social media star wore a Raf Simons spring 2023 look that included a chunky thigh-skimming black leather jacket and a camel-hued knit dress, as well as a pair of sunglasses and a structured helmet-shaped bag. On her feet, Jenner wore a pair of black pointy Raf Simons heels, which at first sight appeared heelless. The black pumps have what is referred to as a cantilever heel—when the heel sharply dips and is placed closer to the toes, rather than the heel of the foot. This cantilever effect—which can be applied to other things like bridges and homes—hides the heel, making it almost invisible. And though Jenner is a modern woman, her shoes are undeniably retro. In fact, this style appeared as early as February 1939 in the pages of Vogue. In the article, nine famed male industrial designers predicted pieces of clothing for the future woman, including an electrically heated coat and a belt with a pocket for a two-way radio set. (One man thought up a woman with naturally long lashes too.) In one instance, the engineer and artist George Sakier imagined a cantilever heel, and described it as “the standard heel, which is virtually a column and, therefore, implies bearing a load, I have changed to a cantilever arch to achieve lightness and ‘lift’—in a character with the dress.” If the wearer was worried about imbalance, Sakier explained that there was nothing to fret about in terms of the shoe’s physics: “The point of bearing in this shoe is exactly the same as the standard heel, and disturbs none of the customary equilibrium.”Sakier wasn’t too far off in his trend prediction, and the heel appeared again in the pages of Vogue a year later in 1940. But little did he know that it would be worn by perhaps one of the most recognizable faces in the world too.

Rae’s LACMA outfit and CFDA look were warmly received by her legions of Gen-Z followers. Watnick hopes this taste of couture will inspire them to hit the books. “It’s all new for them,” says Watnick. “They might ignore the names, but they’re very visual, appreciate beauty, and are eager to learn more. One of the reasons [people] end up in fashion is because they love what they see so much they start to read up on it.”After back-to-back vintage moments, Rae is already brainstorming the next runway collection she’d like to revisit, and her current wish list is filled with master couturiers. “Balenciaga’s velvet and tulle “mermaid” dress from 1951 worn by Barbara Goalen,” she says, referencing the referencing black and white fishtail dress Irving Penn shot for Vogue. “[Or] something from Alexander McQueen’s archive. It’s truly fulfilling to carry on the legacy a fashion piece leaves behind.”
