You may have wondered: Is this just another offshoot of the wedding industry complex? Is this not just a trip with your partner? Yes, maybe. But here’s my take: A lot about the wedding planning process—especially in the final stages—can make you feel like it’s none of the couple’s business. Suddenly, you focus on who sits next to whom and who gets one and why the flowers cost so much and which big family member is making a fuss. It’s great to take a break and focus on your relationship. And it’s nice to name that rhythm because you’re only married once. (Hopefully at least.) Marrakech has always been our dream honeymoon destination. Our request was simple: We wanted to go to a place that neither of us had been before, had good food, and had plenty to do besides sitting by the beach or the hotel pool. Taking advantage of the long January weekend (and extending it a bit) is considered a PTO-friendly way to have a couple’s vacation. With the help of Four Seasons in Marrakech, our three-night, four-day itinerary was quickly mapped out. Located just a 10-minute drive from Marrakech’s old town, but still in the heart of the city, the hotel and spa setting feels perfect—with its palm-fringed pool and pink exterior walls, itself is an oasis.
Photo: Courtesy of Airbnb The whimsical nature of Woodstock is at your fingertips with this charming fire-red cabin from the 1940s. With a cozy interior well-equipped and—according to the list—strong Wi-Fi, it also serves as the perfect working outpost. Stay at this charming townhouse in the Hudson Valley, filled with antiques and old world details. There’s a cast-iron tub, a breakfast nook, a kitchen with copper pans and a master bedroom with French doors. Photo: Courtesy of Airbnb Local chef Inez Valk-Kempthrone hosts this serene studio, nestled on a hillside in the Catskills. In addition to the two bedrooms, it comes complete with a foot bath and fire pit. Reviews note its remoteness—so bring some games and hot cocoa, and make the best winter night. If you’re just starting out on your wedding planning journey, you probably haven’t thought of a honeymoon yet. But what if the idea of asking for a bunch of time off right after a sabbatical for your actual wedding seems a bit daunting? Let me introduce you to the concept of a honeymoon, which has gained popularity in recent years as an alternative to—or tease—a longer, more traditional honeymoon. Most minimoons take place right after the wedding and arrive at a nearby location. However, following the “honeymoon is a state of mind” approach, my fiancé and I decided to have a honeymoon in Marrakech three months before our actual ceremony in April. .
Photo: Alan Keohane Our trip began with a lunch of mint tea and Moroccan salad in our suite, overlooking the pool and beyond the Atlas Mountains. Tired of flights, we spent the rest of the day walking around the touristic center of Jemaa el Fna square in the medina (the historic center of Marrakech) for the first time. The old city is surrounded by 19 km of characteristic pink walls dating from the 12th century; here you’ll find winding streets filled with small shops and vendors selling everything from caftan to paprika to imitation Louis Vuitton headscarves to historic palaces. It turned out that the first day of seeing and smelling the spice vendors and food stalls wasn’t enough—eager to learn more, we returned the next morning for a tour of the old town there is a guide. First, a tour of the Bahia and El Badi palaces with their intricate tiled constructions and lush gardens, then lunch—but most importantly, Arabica coffee—at Bacha Coffee House & Museum . (Hazelnut coffee with cream is something I’ve been trying to recreate since returning from a trip.) Then a plate of fresh chebakia bought from a street stall—a strip of deep-fried dough flavored with sesame and orange blossom, rolled into a circle—and I learned that leaving room for dessert is a must in Marrakech.
