And Wales Bonner x Adidas! [laughs] Abbie in Eckhaus Latta’s sweatpants and hoodie combo in episode four. “The girls were wearing heels and carrying hand luggage and I was like… what do you expect? I love those sweatpants. They’re weird and weirdly coded with words and screen prints of things like jockstraps. I like wearing them because people look at me [laughs],” he said. Abbie wears a Telfar tracksuit in episode three. “I don’t really show much skin. I mean, I would wear shorts and all, but they want me to be topless and I’m not [laughs]. Thighs this is what you get! Courtesy of NetflixI want to talk more about this idea of becoming aspirational. I know that many people look at you at Eckhaus, Telfar, Peter Do, etc., and yearn for your style and wardrobe. I want to show that the aspiration can support young designers, in whom you can see yourself. It’s not about spending the most money on a luxury brand, it’s about being able to buy a Telfar tracksuit and be stylish, savvy, part of the conversation. It’s its content, these community markers, and the communities you want to be a part of.
How would you describe your own personal style on the show and your views on fashion? After all, you are a fashion editor. I really like dressing up when I can relate to the designers or the stories they are trying to tell. Sometimes I find that I don’t necessarily connect with the stories the big luxury brands are telling. I hate sequins, I hate glitter, and I don’t like big logos. I like to be relaxed and comfortable. I cycle everywhere, so I need things that are really usable when I’m in the city. But overall, I think it’s important as an editor to make decisions to support people you trust. It was a huge decision for me to put people in such a place and for a demographic that might not know them. I really wanted to make sure my style was really New York, which I dress anyway. I would like to offer a spot for brands and designers that I have an interest in or a relationship with. There’s something funny about you saying you hate bling when you’re in Bling Empire… This is something I’ve encountered quite a few times during filming, when the producers told me I had no aspirations. It really frustrates me because…what are you talking about? I have been very fortunate with my career to work in places where anyone who loves fashion would fall in love with it. I’m not saying this to brag, but having lived in Paris, doing Systems, Documentation [Journals], Magazines, and all of this… I think they’re like you’re not people with hunger. No, I’m not wearing diamonds or sequins or any of that. I was really offended, so I started wearing sweatpants [laughs]. Telfar Sportswear and Eckahus Latta…
While wearing a Puppets & Puppets cake hat in Surrealist Ball in the first episode, you mentioned “bringing downtown to the upper quarter”, which I feel is quite similar to how your dress in the show. Yes, and it was a very obvious decision. Also to re-wear items or wear womenswear and mix and match. So when you watch these shows, they usually don’t focus on how men dress. Women, they’re wearing gowns, haute couture, and all this. That’s cool and awesome, but there are other luxury versions out there. Abbie wears a Puppets & Puppets hat in episode one. Abbie wears the Emily Dawn Long tiara in episodes five and six. He says his headgear choices have inspired many direct messages from fans. What does your co-star say about these items or brands? They didn’t say anything. But I mean, sometimes they don’t know these brands. I actually took Nam [Laks, who was also on the show] to a Puppet and Puppet show, but we couldn’t film that day. It is important to show my friends these types of designers, because as I said, as we keep saying, they are also very luxurious. I was really surprised when we went to the Bahamas and Tina was wearing a Vaquera hat.
