After graduating from high school, Arocena studied Textile Art and Design and Technology in North Carolina, while Datinguinoo became a barber. In 2015, Arocena decided to take the leap and moved to New York, interning at Assembly New York. “It was the first time I saw an industrial model,” she recalls. “What you learn in school, what’s in the books, or even the McCall patterns—the annotations are not the same.” But the role is unpaid – isn’t that always the case? – so she found a part-time job as an active clothing designer. He’s still working as a barber and Arocena does. job at the activewear company when they started a short-lived, temporary clothing resale business. It lasted a year. They don’t know how to maintain or expand it, but Arocena says it’s a good introduction to how they work together as business partners.
Since the September 2021 show in New York, meaning spring 2022, there has been much talk about the state of fashion in the city. From fellow writers and editors, to buyers, influencers and journalists, I keep hearing a version of the same catchphrase: “New York is back!” When it comes to New York’s return, we’re talking about designers like Carly Marks of Puppets and Puppets, Christopher John Rogers, Theophilio and Elena Velez. But what about the hands behind their most amazing looks? As usual, hidden in plain sight. That’s the story of Bryan Datinguinoo and Clarissa Arocena of apparel development studio HIPS, but not if I could do something about it. Before becoming business and romantic partners, this North Carolina-born, Filipino-American duo were high school friends and shared a taste for fashion. “We rave about Marc Jacobs or Yves Saint Laurent,” Datinguinoo told me one rainy morning at the Long Island City studio they moved into a year ago. “After that, we just liked each other, and…” As he continued, their one-year-old Ayanni giggled in the background, finishing the sentence for him.
Stella Maxwell taught us how to walk the skyscrapers at Andreas Kronthaler for the Vivienne Westwood Show It was 2017, Arocena quit her job to become a full-time freelance prototyping and design developer, despite HIPS not officially started until 2018. Their first customer through Craigslist was a menswear brand. “He’s doing pretty basic stuff, but it’s very useful because without it we would never have been able to create these wild silhouettes.” They continued to pick clients and projects, and by 2019, Datinguinoo was able to drop her barber gigs and devote herself full time to HIPS. So why HIPS? It’s an acronym for Hidden In Plain Sight. “This is from way back when people were still using Snapchat.” Datinguinoo recalls, “At the barbershop, there was a random pink door that I always took selfies with in the front, but it wasn’t me, it was just my shadow and I kept captioning it. is ‘hidden in plain sight’. In the end, it stuck as the name. And if you think about it, it makes sense because we’re stylists building designs, not designers. You don’t need to know us unless you really need to know us.
