As the season goes on she’s growing up and taking more fashion risks. But I don’t want her to lose herself. It was really inspiring to see so many people dress like her for Halloween. It’s like—is she not the dweebiest dresser? But so many people know her style and who she is and what her wardrobe represents. So it’s keeping that but growing her up and keeping what’s important to her. The best boots can withstand grime while looking stellar and timeless. The boot in question is by Bogs—a classic workwear boot—which received an elevated yet mindful makeover courtesy of Alex Dymond and Sky High Farm Workwear (SHFWW), the buzzy clothing label inspired by the upstate New York farm and non-profit organization founded by artist Dan Colen. The boots, which will be sold at Nordstrom, Bogs.com, SkyHighFarmWorkwear.com, and Dover Street Market, on November 18, come in two iterations, which retail for $180: plain black—which has the charming Sky High Farm logo of a smiling crescent moon with a strawberry—and camo, which also features the logo.
And let’s turn to Abbott Elementary, which you write, produce and star in. How did you approach this second season knowing that there was now an audience and all these expectations placed on the thing you’ve created? I really wanted to come to it not really worrying about any of that stuff. I wanted to do what I had in mind all along [even back to] when we were making the first season. Of course we wanted the audience to have fun and think it’s funny, but we wanted to make sure we were building the show that we wanted to build. Something that the audience would enjoy, but on our own accord. We wanted to make sure we were telling stories the way we wanted to.Matt Sayles/ABC And tell me about Janine’s wardrobe–which can lean twee at times. Can we expect any kind of changes or maturation to the way she dresses? It’s slowly changing. I’m super big on working with our costume department to slowly elevate Janine. For instance one thing that was important to me was that last season Jeanine wore a lot of flowery patterns. This year a lot of patterns are a bit more structured, to kind of show that this is a person seeking structure.
What did you discover from studying her vocal patterns? What parts did you hone in on? Hearing you speak, I’m noticing you both have a similar register! You know what? Me too. I’m not naturally the most excited talker, but I think that’s what Oprah carries well. She is excited, she is passionate about what she’s talking about. But her tone is grounded and it’s giving you the information that you need. I remember that being one of the biggest fittings of my life. We tried on so many different things. We really wanted to get something that I felt comfortable in, something that represented the ’80s, and something that Oprah would’ve actually worn. That was a long fitting. I feel like we tried on close to 40 things. I’m a different size than Oprah. I’m pretty short. So trying to find things that fit my body but also fit what Oprah’s style was. And what’s funny is that Moira Frazier—who does the hair on Abbott and is the head of the hair department—actually did the wig for Oprah. I actually liked that wig because it was actually for that period of time. We may think we know what Oprah’s hair looked like but she did have a hairstyle evolution. At that time it presented more like that: flipped up and big. More so than what your typical Oprah go-to wig might be.
