Photo: Teitur Ardal / Courtesy of Carl Hjelm Sandqvist For his part, Sandqvist said that Ferm “is the only person I can think of to help me solve this problem because he is an artist himself and he He has a way of understanding sounds as well as ways to create emotions with them. When I sent him the songs, two days later he called me back and asked me very subtly, ‘Are you okay?’ The sounds represent a chaotic state of mind.” It’s easy to get lost in the emotional Sturm und Drang on Power Ballads, but it’s actually a meticulously structured project. The songs in order form an emotional journey through pain to a kind of release in the form of amnesia. In addition to using her voice to convey a variety of emotions, Sandqvist explains, the idea is that each track goes up a key. “This is a very musical, weird thing to mention, but the album starts with C major, and then it goes up and up and up with each song. I wanted to create this feeling of rebirth, like the character forgets everything he’s been through so he can wake up again and repeat the same mistake, because that’s the whole idea of the music, or a song, for me. A song is never learned; it keeps repeating its mistakes.” When Sandqvist couldn’t hit the high notes, he had to find every solution, such as lowering his voice. “You need boundaries to build your ideas.”
The album’s narrator is based on the god Asclepius, son of Apollo and Coronis (a mortal), while Sandqvist’s visual character borrows from the stereotype of the trickster (a sort of clown). He became acquainted with Asclepius while reading a book that related psychoanalysis to Greek mythology/religion. “I really wanted to do something with this divine character,” the musician recounts, “and then I started, like, looking at myself… [and] I realized I really couldn’t. make an album about Asclepius. I had to put it into a more human perspective. Sandqvist was also affected by recent heartbreak: “I was very sad at the time, and it was a way for me to redirect my thoughts to something else.” The image Sandqvist developed for the album has Las Vegas influences and smoky polyester; Frank Sinatra impersonation territory. Sandqvist notes: “I’ve been messing around with this crooner idea for years, but I also love looking at it from a meta perspective. “I’m playing a guy who wants to play Frank Sinatra. It’s a pretty weak character… if you’re going to sing about pain and also use your personal experience in it, you have to make fun of the character as well as give it a bit of an edge. The image of weak masculinity that Sandqvist presents here is a departure from the androgynous look he was often asked to evoke when he was a model.
For many years, Sandqvist traveled the world as a fashion model while also joining a band. For a while, the two remained separate, but then, he explained, “Two different stories started sliding into each other.” He has resisted this, such as not posting pictures of the runway on his Instagram. Sandqvist is now ready for some level of total exposure. “I can’t ignore the fact that I’ve been a fashion model for half my life,” he said. “For me, it has always been associated with me playing in a band. So the brands projected their idea of me as a certain rock-and-roll person and dressed me [as such], which really distorts my self-image. my body and how I should become a musician or singer.” He continued, Power Ballads, “is how I control the story. I want to blur the line between who people think I am and who I think I am. We are wearing masks and for me it is important to be aware of this mask.” Sandqvist is releasing Power Ballads on its own label, Omen of Future Deeds. “I think it’s more interesting to losers when you just use what you can,” said the Swede, a fan of Jim Jarmusch’s “Just Do It” philosophy. While that movement is focused on the underworld, Sandqvist’s work is more metaphysical. There’s something fundamental, even survivor, about battling darkness — inside or out. “It’s a very typical thing to say, but I think the cold and the harshness affects the Swedes,” he explains. “Likes the balance between light and dark, too, and has a brief period of happiness in the summer that turns into total darkness. Light is very limited, stepping outside is like suffocating people who just want to get inside. And then we just keep forgetting every summer that this is our life, that this is how it goes every year.” It sounds like falling in love.
