Foy: Sarah’s model of creating something and prioritizing experience over results is revolutionary, although it seems like it’s probably the best and simplest way to create something. Buckley: Dede says budget for a therapist on your set, if that’s what you need. It was the first time I experienced that, and to be honest, I was a bit like, No thanks, I’m fine. Until I wasn’t okay, and then I really needed her, and knowing that it was always there was a huge help. It allows us to go further emotionally, knowing that we can be held back. Rooney carried his baby on set and sometimes had to run outside to breastfeed. If people find it difficult, a 45-minute break is completely permissible and necessary. The aggressive, crazy, quite masculine, aggressive role model on the set is not necessary, much less makes the work better. It makes work more intimidating. Set that tone and establish an environment where people feel that they can actually jump off a cliff and know they’re going to be caught on the other side—that should be the model for all of the following movies. this. Work will be better for it. Did working on this film change the way you view being a woman?
Buckley: I feel like I’m constantly changing my perception of women. I don’t think it’s a finite thing for me. What’s interesting is when you get stories like this and Missing Daughter—we’re taking back the original story that was always assigned to us and telling the truth. We are not second class citizens who take a bite of an apple and are cursed for life. Foy: Female stories are universally applicable. It’s not about men versus women. It’s not about things being gendered that way. There is a human story, and that applies to people from all walks of life. Foy: There have been some very emotional reactions and responses. The important thing about the movie is that it needs to be seen with everyone. It needs to be discussed and debated and reviewed. It makes up the overall experience of watching a movie. I’m honored to be a part of something where people actually engage and discuss it. Buckley: I really don’t understand why, but this movie is touching an unconscious wound. Watching it with an audience, it was like something was released. Both are grateful and also like, “I need a drink.” [Laughs.] That kind of fundamental feeling is thrilling, and I think this movie will go viral. It’s not like, “Ta-da! This is our movie.” There is something much deeper, and it will probably take longer, for it to seep into our culture.
Buckley: She’s so strong. What I learned the most from her was how she leads with this strong weakness, which is quite unusual as a director. One of the reasons I wanted to do this was her documentary , The Stories We Tell, where she also went through a personal experience and tried to keep close relationships. and not to love or judge but really let all that complexity and chaos exist so something can be moved through. She’s just insatiable curiosity, and that curiosity is what fuels her powers. I just feel incredibly fortunate to work with female directors like her and Maggie [Gyllenhaal, director of The Lost Daughter] and [Women Talking producers] Fran [McDormand] and Dede Gardner, who this giant. They don’t tell a story that has been told before; they’re piercing the sides of something unspeakable. Even this press tour, the conversation between all of us and the audience was like being fed something you didn’t know you were hungry. Mara, Ivey and Foy on set with director Sarah Polley.
