In season 2, episode 8 of The Kardashians, the family yet again turns their personal mythologies into media events—and vice versa. From Kourtney and Travis’s wedding prep with Dolce & Gabbana in Milan, to Kim’s Rocky Balboa–esque training to fit into the Marilyn Dress—and intermittent intra-family buzzing about the highly publicized Blac Chyna trial—we’re not only getting the BTS of headlines we’ve been seeing all year, but we’re also learning just how far the family can stretch their content. (Across three episodes, to be exact—because every plot line that began in Episode 7 was continued in this one and is still without closure.) Here are three things that kept me up after Episode 8 of The Kardashians:
All of Badgley’s videos are created equal in terms of zaniness, but I particularly appreciate the one where he’s running through his apartment and mugging on his balcony to Swift’s “Anti-Hero.” I have, quite literally, thousands of questions: Who’s filming this? Is it Domino Kirke? Is it Sebastian Stan? Is this the kind of thing celebrities have to clear with their PR, or do they just dance their hearts out and see how it’s going down with the general public after the fact?—but in this world of toxic-masculinity culture, it’s fun to see a straight-from-central-casting Hot Hollywood Guy being random and cute and weird on the internet, rather than berating his assistants or going on dates with Kiernan Shipka. (John Mayer, if you’re reading this, leave Sally Draper alone!) Dance on, Badgley, for the love of all that is holy.
So I was surprised to find myself absolutely hooked on his TikTok recently, where he dances to the likes of Taylor Swift and Meghan Trainor and, I must say, really gives it his all. See for yourself: I have always hated when straight, cis men ironically dance to female pop singers, almost as much as when straight, cis men intentionally pick songs by Rihanna or Madonna or any other pop chanteuse at karaoke. (Listen, if you’re going to do a rendition of “La Isla Bonita” or “James Joint,” you need to commit, not just swish your hips around and vaguely indicate that you’re so manly, your interpretation of the song is inherently funny! Sorry!) However, I can’t help being obsessed with Badgley’s performance, specifically because it’s so bizarre. He’s not trying to telegraph how cooler than thou he is—he just seems like a bored dad genuinely having fun on TikTok.
