“The provenance of these items is that they’re coming from an African American who lived in Virginia,” Williams says. “One of the first 13 colonies. Where there’s still racial tension and systemic racism residue. I not only needed something to prove [myself] to my peers peripherally, but I also felt like I needed to prove something to myself coming from where I came from.” A beat later, Williams is more direct about the flashy purchases he made during that first quarter of his career. “At that time, it was just all about stuntin’,” he says with a smile. “I just wanted to stunt on everybody. I was really trying to give off this Richie Rich persona.”
A key part of building that persona was working extensively with the famed jeweler and watch designer Jacob Arabo on custom pieces. Arabo became a go-to for rappers and other celebrities in the ’90s, known in the community—and in a slew of rap songs—as Jacob the Jeweler. A number of the standout lots in Joopiter’s first sale were made in collaboration with Arabo, including a gold astronaut pendant and a pastel-colored NERD chain. “I went to him because I heard Biggie was going there,” Williams says of Arabo. “I heard Mase say it first, but I heard Biggie was always going there. Those guys were my heroes—so I needed to go. And then when I saw the stuff that he had, I couldn’t afford most of that stuff. So I needed to get creative with the money I had and see if he would make me a few things. And he did. Slowly but surely it went from things that were under $2,500 to under $5,000, and then I graduated to making things that were under $10,000, and then I started making things at $20,000. And once I started doing that, it was like you couldn’t tell me shit.”
To do that, Williams launched Joopiter, a global auction house where people can participate in sales both online and in person. He chose to sidestep more established institutions—places like Sotheby’s or Christie’s—because he wanted to do more than just sell things. Future plans include inviting friends, creatives, and even brands to mount auctions of their own, as long as they have exquisite (and Pharrell-approved) taste. A portion of all proceeds will go to Black Ambition, which awards prizes to entrepreneurs from underrepresented backgrounds. “You’re not just here to buy an item, you’re here to buy a story,” Williams says. He offers up his own narrative as an example: a young man who first emerged as one half of the hitmaking duo the Neptunes, producing explosive songs like Nelly’s “Hot in Herre” and Britney Spears’s “I’m a Slave 4 U.”
