Jones’s debut outing for Fendi—the spring 2021 haute couture collection—united the worlds of fashion and Bloomsbury. Though all his collections start with a piece of music that he’s thinking about, he set this one to the spoken word. “Words, English words,” intoned the writer Virginia Woolf in her cut-crystal accent, “are full of echoes, of memories, of associations—naturally.” To that, Jones added the voices of Tilda Swinton, Isabella Rossellini, Christy Turlington, and Kate Moss reading from the passionate letters that Woolf exchanged with the writer and plantswoman Vita Sackville-West. Jones had taken inspiration for the collection from Woolf’s 1928 novel Orlando, with its central character—who moves effortlessly through the centuries, changing sex along the way—based on Sackville-West. Jones shipped over some of his own Bloomsbury treasures—along with some books from his library, hoping that guests might enjoy reading them—to dress the set. In the end, the collection was presented via live­stream on Jones’s pan-generational cast of friends and model muses, including Delfina Delettrez herself.

“With Kim it’s about hard work, but also a shared sense of humor—there’s a subtle irony that is always present at Fendi,” notes Delettrez. While he was working intensively on reshaping Fendi—and amid his ongoing work for Dior—Jones was looking for a country house in bucolic Sussex that would provide a weekend respite from his relentless work schedule, ultimately finding the perfect place online: a beautiful 18th-century brick-and-flint-stone rectory out of an E. M. Forster novel, replete with Victorian additions, wreathed in wisteria, and with a croquet lawn and blowsy herbaceous borders in the back, and fast by the storied villages once peopled by the Bloomsbury Group. “It was perfect,” Jones says. “There’s enough land to have privacy for the dogs [Jones has four—Dexter, Lulu, Lola, and Cookie], and then it’s got a secondary house.”

His first ready-to-wear collection for the brand, for fall 2021, he says, “was really about observing what Delfina and her family were wearing.” He also draws inspiration from the pan-generational women in his life, many of whom he casts in his Fendi shows, from Demi Moore to Kate Moss and her daughter, Lila Grace. As for his design philosophy for the brand, Jones says that “it’s about intelligent, strong, independent women. Women get so much more beautiful when they’ve got the confidence of being slightly older. I like celebrating women of different ages, and I’ve got friends of different ages and it just seems natural. They are all obsessed—I get harassed nonstop, from Courtney Love to Lily Allen! That makes me thrilled: Dressing the people I love and admire is really important.”
