To complete the menu of relaxing pursuits, there’s The Pridwin Spa, which offers a full menu of sea-inspired spa and bodywork treatments, including its signature bespoke facial using seaweed-based products from Osea. Its natural light-filled, soothing pink treatment rooms boast beautiful corner views of the bay and the cheerily wallpapered hallways are decorated with an array of framed vintage bathing suits stowed away from decades past. The overwhelming sentiment in this new chapter? It’s still The Pridwin. As Glenn Petry, who spent his summers growing up working at The Pridwin, jokes, “It looks more like the old hotel now than it did before.” Not long ago, you might have found yourself all dressed up with nowhere to go. But that was then, and this is now. July brings lots to do—especially in the culinary space—from Manhattan to Boston to Atlanta. Gitano Island pops up on New York’s Governors Island, and Midtown gets a lot chicer with the arrival of 53, the stunning Asian restaurant situated at a storied address. Beyond restaurants, an exhibition in Atlanta’s Botanical Garden spotlights a novel take on origami, while a show at the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology explores the elegant parallels between the archives of Dior and Balenciaga. More on all of these—plus outfit suggestions!—in July’s edition of What to Wear Where.
These retro touches are evident inside The Terrace restaurant, which has a warm, Palm Springs-like aesthetic, from its turquoise-stained wood floors to the custom green banquette and horseshoe-shaped Crescent Bar with its bubblegum pink stools and cabana-like red, white, and pink candy-stripe awning. In the center of the room, a duo of wicker peacock chairs sit in front of a white-washed brick double-sided fireplace. Its other mantle faces the outdoor porch lounge which looks out on the rolling lawn and sailboat-dotted seashore. The Pridwin’s iconic view is all the more sublime when enjoyed at sunset with a cocktail or glass of local East End wine and a fresh seafood dish from the classic American menu overseen by executive chef Drew Hiatt (formerly of Bridgehampton’s Topping Rose House). Its highlights include a creamy lobster caprese salad, crispy Montauk striped bass with leeks and golden chanterelle mushrooms, and a key lime cheesecake with honey-yuzu ginger glaze for dessert. In the morning, don’t miss an old Pridwin favorite: the famous freshly-baked donuts—all the more perfect paired with coffee and a book on the deck.
The heart of The Pridwin is its white clapboard main house complete with the property’s signature hunter green window encasements. There are four floors (two for guest rooms, two for common space) and a completely restored upper lobby with original wainscotting, hardwood floors, and a cascade of chandeliers from the 1927 dining room. It’s there you’ll find the cozy lounge area anchored by a grand restored fireplace and filled with more bygone relics: midcentury rattan furniture and built-in shelves stacked with old books and wooden model ships. “I salvaged as much as I could from the original building,” says Colleen, crediting the Petrys for storing away these treasures. “There’s ’30s, ’40s, ’50s, and ’60s—it’s an amazing compilation.”
