Over the phone, Mendez and I joke that that might just be the ultimate metaphor for queer literature’s crossover. “The book’s on the table in a scene that went viral where Charlotte is talking about Miranda having sex [with Che Diaz],” he says. It’s not quite a literary prize (and Rainbow Milk has been nominated for several), but it is fitting, because “that scene is naughty and nasty and fun—and that’s what I wanted Rainbow Milk to be.” In depicting intergenerational and interracial sex, the book goes beyond the idea of “palatable” sex “between the ‘perfect girl’ and ‘perfect boy.’” Mendez feels that readers are hungry for this—for something more “honest.” Machado agrees: “I don’t think a queer writer’s job is to be accessible to a straight audience, but I do think we underestimate people’s capacity to read beyond their means.”
“If anything, I wouldn’t call it the ‘golden age’—I’d call it the age where book publishing is catching up to queer life and queer stories,” says Howard, who edited Schulman’s recent oral history of the AIDS activist group ACT UP, Let the Record Show, and the writer Brontez Purnell’s 100 Boyfriends, a hilarious compilation of cruising stories. While these two books are wildly different, he says, both are uncompromising in their queerness. This applies to Detransition, Baby, too: “Torrey’s book was a huge moment because of how not written for a cis audience it is,” he says. “And yet you have book clubs of cis moms reading these complex ideas about transness.” While there is “still value” in the generic queer coming-out memoir, “publishers are giving readers more options than sad books about queer people that traffic in trauma—we’re getting joy, queer sex and dysfunction,” Howard adds. A case in point: Paul Mendez’s novel Rainbow Milk, the sexually graphic story of a Black gay Jehovah’s Witness who becomes a sex worker. The book has found a broad readership, even reaching the set of the Sex and the City reboot And Just Like That, where Sarah Jessica Parker was spotted reading it as Carrie Bradshaw.
In the U.K., several brand-new LGBTQ+-focused bookshops have been opening their doors in cities beyond London. Amidst a general climate of transphobia (transphobic hate crime reports have quadrupled across Britain in six years) Shon Faye’s 2021 book The Transgender Issue—soon to be published in North America, and six other countries—has topped sales charts. “Books that wouldn’t be picked up abroad three to four years ago are being picked up all over the place,” Howard observes. Similarly, on-screen adaptation deals are flooding in. Detransition, Baby is being turned into a television series, as is Akwaeke Emezi’s novel Freshwater; and Real Life by Brandon Taylor, which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2020, is being developed as a film.
